On Tuesday the exchange rate of the Haitian gourde to the U.S. dollar was set at 44 HTG to 1 USD, signaling a steady decline in the past 13 months. Citizens were shocked to learn, in April, that the exchange rate was 43 HTG to 1 USD, after a year ago, in 2012, it was 41.50 HTG to 1 USD. Minister of the Economy and Finance Wilson Laleau said a commission would be established to address the situation and stabilize it. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Minister of Economy and Finance Wilson Laleau confirmed the information from Senator Jocelerme Privert who said that there would be a $419 million [US] deficit in the 2013 budget. But Minister Laleau was unable to provide any actions that the government would take to address the problem.

Senator Privert said on Monday May 20, 2013 that the government of Michel Martelly was 9 billion HTG ($204 million [US]) in the red for its accounting after 6 months and was trending towards being nearly a half billion USD in the red by year's end.

Approached by journalists, Wilson Laleau, who also holds the post of Minister of Commerce and Industry, praised Senator Jocelerme Privert before agree with him:

"Senator Privert is a specialist in finances. He was the Director of the DGi and he was a Minister of Finance so he, himself would know of theses things."

"What he is saying is true, in the sense that there is a shortage of money collected in the financial system... but this is something that has been true for many years..."

Wilson Laleau justified the deficits in accounting by pointing to past administrations which he said managed the same kind of deficits.

The answer for Haiti's Minister of Finance was to further equip the tax and customs institutions in order to collect more revenue. Two prominent economists suggested that the Haitian government curb expenditures until a solution is found for the deficit.

Leadership, Authenticity, & Your personal brand

Rooseveltjf's Blog 23 May 2013, 5:33 am CEST

New-York Times best-selling author Chris Brady, just released a talk in the LIFE Series on leadership, authenticity, and your personal brand which is your uniqueness, your God-given calling to LIFE, your purpose, your raison d’etre.

With humor, passion, and great speaking ability, Brady calls upon us to dig deep in ourselves to detect our uniqueness.

“No one else has your story. Nobody experiences the world as the same way as you”, Chris Brady said in an audio CD available in the LIFE Library.

This concept of “uniqueness” to life is a preamble to what Brady calls your “personal brand”.

He defines your personal brand (PB) as “whatever you bring to the world which is uniquely yours”.

“The more you stick to what is uniquely yours”, he said, “the more authentic you are, and the more interesting it is, the more it is marketable to others”.

Brady singled out Robert Redford’s outstanding movie “The legend of the bagger vance” which describes a down-and-out golfer attempts to recover his game and his life with help from a mystical caddy challenging him to find his “authentic swing”.

“It’s time to move on, and to drop the baggage of the past, and find your authentic swing”, Brady reported from this movie which, he said, is not about sport, but a real application to leadership, and success.

“We meet people who have been in some wars in their lives and who have their heads messed up. Sometimes, we can’t make our heads clear about the past and feel responsible for damages in our lives and picture ourselves of not worthy accomplishing anything”, Brady commented adding “it’s like we’re already die and waiting to make it official”.

And there’s also the negative messages the world is sending to us: “don’t try too hard”, “don’t waste time achieving anything”, “don’t get your hopes up”.

“Our negative self-talk gets mixed with popular saying dragging us to mediocrity, insignificance, and unhappiness” Brady said.

We spend days of insignificance and misalignment away from our purpose chasing lesser things for immediate satisfaction and at the moment pleasure.

It’s time to find our authentic swing, that thing we were born to do, that thing that makes us come alive.

kenbe,

Roosevelt

France Justice Minister supports land reform for slaves' descendants

Defend Haiti | Haitian News, Politics, Entertainment, Sports and Events 23 May 2013, 3:21 am CEST

PARIS, France (defend.ht) - French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira said she supports a redistribution of land in France's Caribbean overseas territories to help the descendants of slaves. She said this two days after French President Francois Hollande said reparations for slavery impossible.

{loadposition art_ad}

PARIS, France (defend.ht) - French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira said she supports a redistribution of land in France's Caribbean overseas territories to help the descendants of slaves. She said this two days after French President Francois Hollande said reparations for slavery impossible.

“In the overseas territories there was a land grab, the general result was that the descendants of slaves were left without access to land. Therefore we should think about – without sparking a civil war – regrouping properties that were divided and about land reform,” Taubira said in an interview published in the Journal de Dimanche weekly on Sunday.

“There are steps that should be taken, without expropriations, and clearly explaining the reason behind the state’s push to purchase land,” Taubira added.

CRAN an organization looking to sue the French state-owned bank for Haiti's independence debt welcomed Taubira’s announcement, saying land reform was another important way France could atone for its past mistakes.

“I am overjoyed to hear of Mrs. Taubira’s announcement,” CRAN president Luis-Georges Tin told FRANCE 24. “It’s clear that Mr. Hollande is an uncomfortable position. He is coming off as a man who turns people away, who tells the victims of slavery ‘too bad’.”

Tin said that the kind of land reform his group has championed – and that Taubira has espoused – would not lead to expropriations, claiming the state owned many tracts of unused land in the overseas territories.

“Our colleagues overseas have heard the announcement loud and clear… we all expect to be contacted quickly by Mrs. Taubira and the government to figure out how to put this policy in place,” Tin noted, adding that the new announcement would in no way dissuade his group from suing the CDC.
